Clinical Excellence Research Center Fellowships
Designing better, more affordable care models
The Clinical Excellence Research Center (CERC) Fellowship provides post-doctoral students an opportunity to gain knowledge, skills, and experience developing innovative health care delivery models that improve patient health and lower annual per capita health spending.
Starting in August 2012 the CERC Fellowship Program will field trans-disciplinary teams of research fellows to design and test innovative health care delivery models for health conditions associated with substantial disability and health spending. This year’s fellows focused on the following conditions and procedures:
- Late stage cancer
- Chronic kidney disease
- Screening colonoscopies
- Bariatric surgery
Each year’s class of fellows is presented with a new set of health conditions to investigate.
We seek fellows from multiple disciplines and specialties who have secured at least one year of pre-arranged research fellowship funding. CERC provides supplemental travel and other research expense support. Depending on the availability of funding, fellows may have the option to pursue a second year in the program to participate in the evaluation of the effectiveness of their models.
The Approach
The teams will employ a design and prototyping methodology derived from Stanford’s Biodesign Program and from the Stanford D. School. The method includes:
- Intensive introductory training in design tools and in the clinical and economic issues associated with the target conditions
- Immersion in how care is delivered for these conditions
- Identification of poorly met patient, clinician and societal needs
- Exposure to the care models used by today’s price-performance leaders
- Preparation of conceptual and detailed designs for new care models that push beyond today’s price-performance frontier
- Guiding clinical teams in pilot testing and refining the new care models
- Publishing research on model design, implementation and outcomes
Faculty and Mentors
The fellowship program is lead by Arnold Milstein, MD, MPH who is the Director of CERC. Additional faculty and mentors are drawn primarily from Stanford’s schools of Medicine, Engineering and Business. Distinguished national visiting scholars will also participate in the training and on-going mentorship of fellows. CERC-affiliated clinical care sites will provide test beds for the new models.
Schedule and Contact Information
Fellows will complete a 12-month program that begins in August 2012. For further information contact Bob Rebitzer at rebitzer@stanford.edu.
